so I started rereading GtN (as one does) and was struck by this passage where from the very beginning of the book, Gideon positions herself as more important to Harrow than the Locked Tomb:

“So, here’s the thing, your Lady would set the Locked Tomb on fire if it meant I’d never see another sky,” Gideon said, looking up. “Your Lady would stone cold eat a baby if it meant she got to lock me up infinitely. Your Lady would slather burning turds on the great-aunts if she thought it would ruin my day. Your Lady is the nastiest b—”ALT

cut to the pool scene and Gideon learns that not only does Harrow love the corpse of the Locked Tomb, but that the corpse of the Locked Tomb was, in all her silent sleep, able to convince Harrow to live in a way Gideon's (loud, active, constant) existance in her life was never able to

“Nav, when I saw her face I decided I wanted to live. I decided to live forever just in case she ever woke up.” Her voice had the quality of someone in a long dream. She stared through Gideon without looking at her, and Gideon gently took her hands away from Harrow’s jaw.ALT
Gideon’s brain moved and broke against itself like the tiny wavelets they had left, the water lurching restlessly from side to side, until it came to a final conclusion.ALT

and I think that is really, like, when Gideon truly starts her sort of... backslide wrt her perception of her relationship with Harrow -- like, at this point in the story in the pool, she's already well along in her corruption arc into the "Perfect Cavalier". BUT like, we know from being inside Harrow's head that Harrow would break herself and her duty in order to hold onto Gideon. she would & she did!!!! which is!!! something that Gideon KNOWS at the beginning of GtN but then forgets/is convinced out of, entierly unintentionally, but to the point where by the time she comes back in HtN she has a totally reversed perception of how Harrow feels. leading to, of course, this:

said. “She’s in love with the refrigerated museum piece in the Locked Tomb. You should’ve seen the look she had on when she told me about this ice-lolly bimbo. I knew the moment I saw it. I never made her look like that … She can’t love me, even if I’d wanted her to. She can’t love you. She can’t even try.”ALT

anyway.

The poem is written in common hymn meter (alternating lines of 8 and 6 syllables, usually iambs), so there are many possible tunes you can use to sing it:

  • Amazing Grace
  • Pokemon theme song
  • Gilligan's Island theme
  • House of the Rising Sun
  • O Little Town of Bethlehem
  • Joy to the World

yet another wip game ✨

rules: share a few lines or a snippet that sums up the main relationship(s) in your wip

tagged by @chiptrillino, i don’t have many wips going on atm and they’re moving at a glacial pace but here are some snippets!! tagging @petricorah, @kyoshialone and @marriedzukka if you want to partecipate!

a lineart bust drawing of sokka, Zuko and Suki, all dressed as kyoshi warriors. Zuko is sandwiched between sokka and Suki, looking surprised and dumbfounded. sokka has a hand on his chest and is leaning towards him with a smile, while Suki is turning Zuko's head towards her with a hand on his chin, resting her thumb under his bottom lipALT
a colored bust drawing of zuko and sokka, at the left of the image Zuko is looking at sokka with a sly smile, and his robe is slipping down his shoulder to expose his chest, at the right of the picture sokka is fully clothed, blushing and looking angry, saying "you're not taking this seriously"ALT
a lineart bust drawing of sokka and zuko, inspired by a scene from the fic "like the sun inside of you", they're both shirtless as if they'd been swimming in the sea, and sokka is holding Zuko's arm gently, looking at a cut on his upper armALT

(this last one courtesy of @ofherlionheart, go stream like the sun inside of you immediately!! and lion if you see this i swear i am going to leave you a comment soon but in the meantime accept this humble offering and propaganda. also tagging you in the game if u feel like it 😌)

Opposite of "came back wrong" is "stayed exactly the same." Oh you want so badly to pretend that you have changed. You changed your face, you changed your name, you started leaning into a whole new role, but I know you. I know you. I know who you used to be, and I can see that person shining through you still. You can fool the world you can fool your friends you can fool yourself but you will not fool me.

fact 1: izuku's unwitting charisma draws in many suitors

hey-hamlet answered:

Ito Hikari couldn’t help but fidget. Just a little. Taking gun licensing exams was a weird job - loads of cops, the odd hero, and a few really sketchy people he proceeded to report to said cops. But this man.

“It’s not that they’re trying to flirt with my boy,” Yagi said casually, before firing three rounds directly into the heart of the target in front of him. Hikari pushed the button for the next set of targets, hands sweaty. “That would be fine enough, he’s a growing kid, he’ll date and fall in love plenty. But -” He reloaded the practice pistol with ease before casually cracking his neck.

“But?” Hikari instantly regretted responding and the man’s ice-blue eyes turned towards him.

“Some of them can’t leave well enough alone when he says no.” Five Shots. Two in the head, two in the heart. One in the crotch. Yagi screwed up his face, the near pinpoint accuracy of his own marksmanship apparently not good enough for him. “Shigaraki and Toga are just unlucky enough to be some of the only ones I’m allowed to shoot.”

Hikari continued the rest of the assessment in a daze. This man was a teacher??? They let him around teenagers?????? He was happy Yagi had passed so easily - there was little to no chance of him ever seeing the guy again.

It wasn’t until he was watching the news that he recognised the two names he’d dropped, and then he felt a whole new wave of sympathy for the man’s son. Two of the most wanted villains in Japan were after the boy? Hikari was so glad his father had been a nice normal salaryman and not whatever top-ranking villain Yagi must have been.

One funny thing to me about across the spiderverse was that like. You KNOW Hobie doesn't fuck with cops. You KNOW he was standing there like chewing on the inside of his cheek Not saying anything really really insensitive about Miles' dad. Spider-punk went the whole film without oinking at anybody I think his restraint is commendable

tlirsgender

Miles, 15 years old, likes his dad: we can't just let people die c'mon guys!

Everyone else: I understand but please listen it's part of the timeline we can't change it without destroying the universe--

Hobie standing over there fidgeting with a pin on his vest that says "ACAB" on it:

image

[ID: tags from @avengerphobic that read "#hobie brown #he has blue shoelaces which means hes killed a cop so im sure he was like screaming on the inside #spiderverse spoilers" /end ID]

Hobie, quietly: I'd kill your dad myself to be honest

Miles: what?

Hobie: nuffink

bifrosted-flakes

Important to note that in the comics he has not only killed cops (he lives in an ultrafascist universe where the cops have venom symbiotes) he also cut off the president’s head with his guitar

tlirsgender

Extremely swag thank you

because-im-freaking-greed

One note: "cut off" sounds like he's got a blade in his guitar, but he doesn't. It's a blunt instrument. He just swung it hard enough to overcome the strength of his neck and rock-em-sock-em'd him

tlirsgender

AWESOME

smalltall

The splash page is glorious. Also his universe being overrun with symbiotes is why his main weapon's the guitar--symbiotes are hypersensitive to loud sounds, so he just plugs that bad boy into a dozen amps cranked to 30 million decibels and sonic blasts them to hell.

Time for a fun little analysis of one of my favorite lines in Hamlet: “I am but mad north-north-west; when the wind is southerly, I know a hawk from a handsaw.”

First, the context: he’s talking to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern after figuring out they were spying on him for the king, following “My uncle-father and aunt-mother are deceived.” Later, as soon as he drops this banger, Guildenstern doesn’t have a chance to respond because Polonius shows up.

Now, the dissection. “But mad north-north-west” implies that he’s only as off-key as a compass that points a little northwest instead of north. The “southern wind” was seen as a “remover of melancholy”, so this was very telling of him. A hawk in almost every context is a spy, and a handsaw is a tool, or a friend.

Finally, the summary: Hamlet was saying that his mind was only slightly askew, and when it was clear of melancholy (as, we can assume, it was in that moment, because the actors were coming and the thespian in him was excited) he knew the difference between a spy and a friend. And he managed to convey all of this in a way that was practically incomprehensible, adding to his assumed antic disposition.

ineffably-human

Okay, but here's the thing. As a character, Guillermo has to exist in a grey space. And he has to be driven by love.

The show doesn't work if he's just a victim who needs to get away. And the show doesn't work if he's just a baby serial killer who was two steps from learning ritual sacrifice whether he'd met Nandor or not. (And the show doesn't work if he was completely ordinary and then the Staten vamps corrupted him beyond 'fixing' or something.)

Guillermo constantly has options. He could return at any time to an ordinary life and no one would stop him. He knows other vampires who can turn him and will probably do it sooner. There are vampires and familiars and normal humans who are all eager to get with him.

In a different story, Guillermo would meet the Mosquito Collectors and train them into an elite vampire-hunting force and become the metaphorical dude who came to work and set fire to the office. He'd have every right, he'd have power and respect and a group of misfits to call home. But he doesn't do that because he doesn't just want that from anywhere, he simply loves vampires, even after years of seeing them at their cruelest/laziest/stupidest.

And there's no indication that he thinks he deserves the treatment he gets. He's side-eyeing the camera the minute we meet him because he knows this is insane. He probably knows he's a little insane, but he's not sorry about it. He makes decisions deliberately, every time, but makes them with his heart.

But, but, here is the other important bit. He also saves the Mosquito Collectors in the end. Because this isn't fundamentally a sadist show. Sean's brain gets fucked up, but then it gets better and his marriage improves. The Baron is actually just kind of lonely and regrets never having kids. The hellhound just wants attention (and Guillermo instinctively knows this) and the Sire just wants to be free. Laszlo kept killing Gregor not out of jealousy, but because Gregor makes his wife sad.

And Guillermo tries to work his way onto the throne and whisper in people's ears, but he has the most success and shines the brightest when he just bursts into the Chamber and saves two lives by following his gut. Because he has a conscience, it's just not wired for people most of the time. He doesn't want to live in a world of people.

He wants respect, he fights for leverage, but this very polite, private man wants to live in a world where bizarre but amazing shit happens, and everyone's fucking and drinking blood, and everyone's emotions are big and messy and ridiculous all the time. And he wants to live there as himself. Because he loves it.

He sits in a cage for a month and comes out more sure than ever that he wants to protect these idiots and make them a family. Whether they like it or not. Because he loves them.

He's getting stronger, and the vampires are getting softer, and everyone is getting truer. Because whether or not they mean for the show to be 'about' anything, I think it's at least partly about power - and power, for Guillermo, is becoming the realest version of himself.

what we do in the shadows
